My husband and I had received a gift certificate to Elements Cafe in
Haddon Heights. We decided to use it at the end our winter holiday, I
called around 3pm to make a 7:45pm reservation. We arrived a bit early
for dinner, so we decided to take a walk down Station Ave. and see what
it had to offer. Most of the shops were closed but it doesn't matter to
us because we are infinitely cheap and only want to window shop. That
spent about 10 minutes of our time and we arrived at the restaurant 5
minutes early (not a problem at all) - we were promptly seated and
asked our choice of seats. Knowing my husband, I chose the window seats
that require you to climb a few steps up to the platform, but give you
a fabulous view of what's going on and allow you to be nosy.
Our server gave us an appropriate amount of time to get comfortable and
look at the menu before coming over. He explained the menu to us that
lists two prices, one for a small plate and another for a large plate.
You can order your meal in small portions allowing you the option to
try more entrees or order one large plate that will come with potatoes
and veggies. We opted for the small plates, giving us a chance to try
things we normally wouldn't order. The server told us that the average
small plate is four bites and depending on your appetite three to four
plates is a good portion (you can always order more - or save room for
dessert).
We decided on three plates each, though my husband REALLY likes to eat,
and was skeptical that three "small" plates would fulfill his hunger. I
started with an appetizer, as did he. I ordered the Baby Spinach Salad,
which includes pickled red onions, spiced walnuts, blue cheese and
balsamic vinaigrette. It was fabulous! The mix of the walnuts and
pickled red onions was tantalizing to the taste buds and left me
wanting more. The hubby opted for the Grilled Corn and Roasted Chicken
Chowder - there wasn't a drop in the bowl when he was done.
For dinner we ordered the following:
Panko crusted Jumbo Lump Crab Cake drizzled with Old Bay spiced aioli.
The crab cake was one of the best I've ever tasted, filled with lump
crab meat and just enough "filler" to hold all of the sweet meat
together.
Brueschetta crusted Grilled Salmon Fillet with a balsamic vinegar
reduction. The brueschetta was a nice tangy taste that mixed with the
salmon magnificently.
Fresh Herb braised Buffalo Brisket with buttermilk potato puree. The
brisket tasted like the pot roast my mom never made, says my husband. I
tasted it and it was lean and tasty meat.
Spinach, Caramelized Onion and Pine Nut Stuffed Beef Tenderloin with
herb infused demi glaze. The meat was a bit darker than we would have
liked, some of it was a nice pink that kept it moist - we would have
preferred all of it to be on the pink side. The piece that was stuffed
was wonderful, with the crunchiness of the pine nuts and the smoothness
of the spinach.
Crispy Pekin Duck Breast with a fermented black bean and cherry
vinaigrette. I found the duck to be a bit dry, but the vinaigrette
added a decent tang to duck.
All in all, the choices we made we would rate in the order listed. We
also saved room for dessert and ordered the chocolate mouse terrine and
the apple spice cake. We would give both a three out of five (five
being the best).
The service really heightens the experience. The staff is knowledgeable
and doesn't rush you. Overall, the meal was a hit with both of us and
we will be making another visit to Elements Cafe sometime soon. Enjoy!
